Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Sorry but some of you are talking nonsense here. Pro football is a business and when you have contracted players for a position and you cannot transfer them then the manager has to make the best of what he's got.

In Centre Mid we have Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere, Declan Rice, Carlos Sanchez, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Robert Snodgrass who can and do play centre Mid. OK some are better out wide perhaps.

What I think you all mean is that we could do with a 2nd Declan Rice. That'll happen when we have room in teh squad maybe Jan or next close season...

Someone like Scott Parker then like I said, there are plenty of players out there like that availeble for around 20 to 30 million but that is appearantly too expensive for Sullivan

"Someone like Yaya Toure"

Maybe there's the rub, not a lot of people like Yaya Toure, especially our price range (even the price we payed for Haller)

Pellegrini lays his style out explicitly in that video that went around when he joined up. Toure was given a pretty free role but the manager said he could still expect him to be able to have ab effect defensively. Not a lot of players you can say that about.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
I agree with Alex V we need someone who can get forward aswell as doing the defensive work well. Someone like Yaya Toure an all action box to box midfielder who can also sit if he´s asked to (Toure´s second position was a DM)

Scott Parker´s reincarniation could solve that too

Et part of Masuakus game is going forward!

not great going forwards............ or backwards for that matter.

actually i would say Masuaka is better going forwards than defending.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Barty - Yea maybe with the attacking full backs, not for me though. I agree with V that if you are gonna partner up Rice it should be with a player that also gets forwarded. like a Kouyate. Have to remember that our full backs are not great going forward, at all.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Chelsea use Kante and Jorginho

Pllegrini has used those at his former clubs in his first eleven regularly

Man City - Fernandinho/Toure (or Fernando)

Real Madrid - Alonso/Gago

Malaga - Camacho/Toulalan

Villareal - Senna/Eguren

And he has played attacking football everywhere he´s been so it has not prevented him in doing so before

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
I agree Manuel and have said some similar.
Noble and Wilshere are the right style of player, but are past it.

Kouyate was too defensive and poor long passing. Diame was better, but not good enough. Unfortunately Song was completely past it by the time we got him, he showed us flashes of good play but not enough. Bit like like Wilshere in many ways.

I can see this position is a difficult one to bring in a really good player at a good price and that is apparently where it went wrong. Let’s hope they are working on getting it right.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Agree with V..so many f you want 2 Dm's, so with the keeper and the back 4 that leaves only 4 attacking players? May as well fucking bring BFS or ginge back. Too many people have built into this modern day football lark, at the end of the day it's forward players that ultimately wins games of football.

SUM A DING WONG 2:32 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Diame and Kouyate, had their uses but they weren't footballers.

For our team to work, we're going to have to press more and intercept ( like Barcelona). You don't have to be great at tackling to be good at pressing.

The biggest disappointment for me so far, has been Wilshere. I don't doubt for one moment his dedication or ability - but, sadly, he is a shadow fitness wise of the player he was.

Fornals clearly needs time to adjust to our game, but he does look like be tries to put a shift in.

Lanzini has looked sharp and seems to be putting in a shift.

I actually thought pre-season Anderson had upped his workrate and tried to press more, which ironically, was to the detriment to his attacking play - maybe that is a sign of how we will try to play as a team.

I think we will get it right eventually. The major problem we have right now, is that you can't have any passengers when playing the press. At the moment, Fornals and Wishere are passengers and its making the rest of the team, especially the other midfielders look bad.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Why can Fornals not be/do that, when he gets his feet under him?

goose 2:27 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
You don’t need to be diving into tackles all over the pitch, just make it difficult when we don’t have the ball.
Get close to people, put them under pressure, deny them time & space.

Mex Martillo 2:26 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
I really do not understand the DM obsession on who.
Yes what we really need is a fast fitter Noble, not a DM.
For DM we have Rice and some not great backup, some better backup would nice. I dear finitely do not want to play with 2DMs!.
What we really need is a good combative central midfielder that is fast, match fit, great passing ability and good at going forward to take part in our attacking.

Should have taken Coventry on the Chinese tour.

CanningTownWA 2:22 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Goose you are right we do need legs Wilshere and Noble are both slow. I know Fornals looks like an attacking midfielder but he can cover ground and there is nothing stopping him, Lanzini, Antonio and Anderson all tracking back to mark players. I think that is our biggest problem putting in a shift, we did it for 20 mins against City and looked good but we need to do it for 90 and against all teams. We needed cover for Rice but not to play along side him.

Alex V 2:21 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Yep I liked Song. If he was here and at his peak maybe you'd do something different with Rice - get him to attack more, or stick him at centre-back instead. Song was best in Rice's position. It'd be a nice problem to have.

*Song type of player.

Side of Ham 2:15 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
What about Song V? He looked like he was on the cusp of being great for us then got injured. He was everywhere in some games linking up going forwards and making the tackles, tidying up and even releasing it for a decent break away.

Alex V 2:12 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
If we're talking for a partner for Rice, or a third player in a three with Rice and Wilshere, then you want someone who doesn't just sit, but offers a dynamic threat going forward but can also do the defensive stuff well. That's not a DM, it's a CM really. Kouyate and Diame did that sort of thing well for us.

goose 2:06 Thu Aug 22
Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
not many do play two.
but the ones they play have LEGS.

i would guess that the km covered by our midfield is usually one of the lowest.
